Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about shopping for business finance in New Zealand and how we help.
What does Biz Loan Marketplace do?
We explain how New Zealand's business lending market works and help business owners find finance that fits. Our guides and tools help you compare lenders and offers; our specialists help you find the right lender when you're ready to borrow.
Are you a lender?
We help you find and arrange business finance with the lender that suits your situation. A real person works on your enquiry and explains who the lender is and what they'll need before anything is signed.
How much can a business borrow?
Property-secured business loans from $20,000 to $5,000,000 — first mortgages, second mortgages and caveat-style security over residential or commercial property. Unsecured and cash-flow options for trading businesses, typically $5,000 to $500,000, sized on turnover and bank statements.
Does enquiring affect my credit score?
No. There's no credit check when you first enquire. A credit check only happens later, with your permission, if you choose to go ahead.
Will you send my details to lots of lenders?
No. We don't sell or broadcast enquiries. A specialist matches you to the lender that suits your situation and talks to you before anything is sent.
Why don't you publish interest rates?
Every business loan is priced on its own circumstances, including security, trading history, credit, purpose and term. Published rates tend to mislead, so we focus on helping you compare actual offers on total dollar cost.
Can I get a business loan with bad credit?
Possibly. Bad credit is considered case by case. Some lenders look past old defaults if the business is trading well or there's property to offer as security. Being upfront about it helps us match you properly.
Can I borrow to pay an IRD debt?
IRD debt is considered case by case. Sometimes a loan makes sense; sometimes an instalment arrangement with Inland Revenue is the better first step. Our page on funding an IRD debt compares the two.
Do I need property to borrow?
No. Trading businesses without property can look at unsecured and cash-flow options, typically $5,000 to $500,000, sized on turnover and bank statements. Property security usually opens up larger amounts and lower costs per dollar.
Do you lend for personal or household purposes?
No. Business purposes only. We don't arrange home loans for living in, car loans for personal use or other consumer credit.
How quickly can I get the money?
It depends on the loan type, the lender and how quickly documents come together. Smaller unsecured amounts can move quickly; property-secured loans need valuation and legal steps. We give you a realistic timeline on the first call.
Do I have to be in Auckland?
No. We help business owners anywhere in New Zealand, and everything can be done by phone and online.
What is the offer comparer?
A free tool that lines up two or three loan offers in dollars: total cost of finance, cost per $1,000 borrowed, money in your hand, flexibility and risk flags. It doesn't need interest rates and saves nothing.
Should I use a broker or go straight to a lender?
Both can work. Going direct suits a simple deal with a lender you already know. Someone who shops the market can help when the deal is complex, time is short or you've been declined. Our broker vs bank page goes through the trade-offs.
What documents will I need?
Usually recent business bank statements, identification, and, for larger loans, financial statements, an IRD account summary and property details. We'll tell you exactly what your lender needs once you decide to proceed.
What if I don't qualify?
We'll tell you honestly, explain why if we can, and suggest what might change the answer, whether that's time, documents, security or a different kind of lender.
